URA’s efforts in combating illicit trade have continued to yield results, with the impounding of 780 litres of fuel and two motorcycles from smugglers in Gulu City recently.

The items were seized in a dramatic last week following an ambush conducted by the Gulu Logistics Hub enforcement team. The operation targeted two young men suspected of transporting smuggled fuel on motorcycles destined for an illegal distribution store in the area.

During the ambush, the team spent over five hours in a concealed ambush near Pallaro Trading Centre in Awach sub-county. As the suspects approached the trading centre, customs officers moved in to intercept, and in a desperate attempt to escape, the smugglers veered off the road into nearby bushes, hoping the terrain would shake off the pursuing officers.

The chase ended at a local homestead, where the suspects attempted to hide behind traditional grass thatched manyattas. The team, however, remained undeterred and successfully apprehended both individuals.

Two motorcycles registration numbers, UMA 797CY and UMA 246CS, were seized along with their cargo of 39 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), totalling 780 litres of fuel.

URA remains committed to protecting the country’s revenue and ensuring compliance with customs laws.

The suspects are currently undergoing offence management procedures, and investigations are ongoing to trace the broader network behind the smuggling ring.
