URA has urged traders in Tororo District to fulfil their tax obligations to drive effective service delivery.

This call was made by URA’s regional tax education officer Andrew Kyakonye following field reports that indicated many traders had not cleared earlier assessed taxes.

“The taxes you pay are used for the construction of the public roads, hospitals, schools and utilities like water and electricity. If you don’t pay, you are promoting underdevelopment of Uganda,” Kyakonye stated.

The tax expert was speaking a door-to-door tax education and sensitization campaign in the District. During the exercise, officials sensitised traders on tax registration, return filing and the taxes that apply to small businesses.

“Presumptive tax is calculated from annual total sales of your business, so it is better you keep proper records of daily sales so that you pay the right taxes,” traders were told.

By the end of the exercise, UGX 13.6 million had been collected in presumptive tax increasing Tororo DT’s performance from 79.4% to 88.1% this financial year.
