In a bid to strengthen tax compliance among education institutions, URA officials have conducted a tax compliance workshop at the Yumbe District Local Government Resource Center. The engagement attracted key stakeholders from the education sector to enhance their understanding of tax obligations and promote voluntary compliance.

The engagement provided a valuable platform for participants to gain practical knowledge on taxation with a focus on improving compliance and enhancing service delivery within education institutions.

During the session, a presentation was delivered by Arnold Jekins Tayebwa, a Tax Education Officer, who emphasized the critical role education institutions play in national development.

“Education institutions play a vital role in shaping the nation and must equally take responsibility in contributing to its development through tax compliance,” Tayebwa asserted.

He further highlighted that understanding taxpayer obligations is key to avoiding penalties and ensuring smooth operations. He guided participants through URA’s mandate, vision, mission, and core values, underscoring its role in mobilizing revenue for national development.

Participants were also urged to fulfill their obligations, including registering for applicable taxes, filing accurate returns, paying taxes on time, and maintaining proper records. Tayebwa further stressed the importance of quoting a Tax Identification Number (TIN) in all transactions, responding promptly to URA communications, and avoiding tax evasion.

The session further outlined registration requirements and highlighted the taxes applicable to the sector, including Income Tax, Corporation Income Tax (CIT), Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Withholding Tax (WHT), Value Added Tax (VAT), and Non-Tax Revenue (NTR).

On the other hand, Afusa Sarah, the Headteacher of Yumbe Senior Secondary School appreciated the initiative noting that such engagements help education leaders better on understanding their obligations.

“Thank you, URA for this valuable workshop. We hope URA can continue organizing these sessions regularly, so that more education administrators and owners benefit from this guidance,” she said.
