The URA Information Technology and Innovation Department (ITID) recently hosted a five-member delegation from the Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) as part of a benchmarking exercise focused on I.T processes.

The team, led by Albert Murungi, the Chief ICT Officer of UEGCL expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from different experiences.

He mentioned that the UEGCL is currently undergoing a digital transformation as it generates electricity from large dams.

“We want to learn from our peers, as different entities have varied operational approaches,” Murungi noted, adding that URA has been on the journey longer.

Linda Namayanja, the Manager of Business Relationship Management and IT quality at URA, advised the UEGCL team to always sensitize their staff before rolling out new systems to manage change effectively.

She stressed the importance of regular engagements with staff to create awareness about confidentiality and necessary changes.

Peter Wasenda, the Ag. Assistant Commissioner IT security shared insights on URA’s transformational journey, revealing that the expansion of operations and the need for security have prompted significant changes within URA’s IT ecosystem.

He highlighted Management support as a driver for success in innovation and emphasised research to improve capacity, ensure work is measurable and maximize the value of existing systems without acquiring new ones.

Wasenda also advised UEGCL to plan for technology developments in advance, ensuring the team is ready to utilize them effectively.

“This requires careful sequencing to avoid wasting resources while considering the needs of clients,” Wasenda added.
