URA Newsletter September 2024

Dear valued Taxpayer,

I want to thank you for the time you have journeyed with us in the revenue collection and tax administration efforts. Your support has tremendously improved our performance as an institution.

For the months of July and August, our revenue performance surpassed the target by UGX 115.912 billion. With the July target set at UGX 2.09 trillion, we collected UGX 2.1 trillion, scoring 104.4% in revenue collection performance while August had a target of UGX 2.323 trillion and URA collected UGX 2.345 trillion representing a 101.22% performance. We wouldn’t have gained this traction without your commitment towards meeting your tax obligations. Thank you so much.

This is just the start towards our journey of collecting UGX 31.98 trillion this financial year. I am confident we can keep the trend flowing so that we liberate Uganda from economic dependence by reducing loan financing of our national budgets.

For this reason, I urge all taxpayers who have outstanding tax liabilities as at June 30, 2023, to apply for the waiver on the interest and penalties accrued to that said tax. For any taxpayer to benefit from the waiver, they are required to pay their outstanding principal tax by December 31, 2024. Please take this opportunity so that you can start your tax journey on a clean slate.

As an institution, we have made some fundamental structural changes to optimise our operational efficiency and collaborative efforts. Key among these is a new department – The Tax Academy which will provide the requisite training and skilling in taxation as we build a culture of continuous improvement and learning. We have also segmented our service management with dedicated divisions to manage upcountry taxpayers and Kampala metropolitan, as we also direct our focus on the public sector and medium taxpayers.

Tax Education is a now a division solely dedicated to empowering taxpayers with tax information to meet their obligations and build voluntary compliance. I guarantee that our content development and outreach efforts will be more targeted so that we reach each one and meet taxpayer needs as we collaboratively work together.

There will be some process changes along the way that are geared towards easing your navigation of our systems and processes. I urge us all to always reach out to us through our various contact touch points in case you get frustrated or hit a snug in meeting your tax obligations. My staff and I are committed to delivering a delightful client experience as we provide a transformational revenue service for the economic independence of Uganda.

I look forward to cementing our working partnerships and also building new stakeholder collaborations that will enable URA to meet her mandate and also foster economic development for our motherland.

Thank you for meeting your civic duty and kicking off the new financial year in high gear. I pray we maintain this momentum until June 2025.

For God and my Country
