The Anti-Corruption Court has remanded a former URA staff on accusations of abuse of office and causing financial loss contrary to sections 10(1), (2), and 19 of the Anti-Corruption Act 2023.
Aggrey Malongo, a 39-year-old resident of Mukono district, was remanded until September 2nd, 2024, when he will appear in court.
State Prosecution told the court, presided over by His Worship Albert Asiimwe, that the suspect committed the crimes between January and December 2021 while employed as a tax officer in URA.
The prosecution stated that Malongo adjusted the tax ledgers of eighteen (18) companies, knowing that his actions would cause a UGX10.523 billion loss to the government of Uganda.
Malongo pleaded not guilty to the four charges.
His Worship Asiimwe requested that the prosecution team speed up the inquiries to enable the court to conclude the case as soon as possible. He also advised the accused to apply for a plea Bargain if he knows that there is incriminating evidence against him.
The magistrate also warned Malongo not to bribe anyone with the hope that they will kill the case. His lawyers were asked to appear at the next hearing with substantial sureties.
Malongo was dismissed by URA’s Management Disciplinary Committee (MDC) on March 11th, 2023, due to absconding from work, fraud, forgery, and falsification.
