Boda Boda riders have been urged to contribute to national development by remitting the UGX 20,000 advance income tax annually, as required by law.

This call was made by Clare Sanyu, the Supervisor of the Northern Region stakeholder coordination project, during an engagement with Boda Boda riders in Gulu city recently. According to Ugandan laws, motorcycles are required to pay UGX 20,000 in tax annually, based on the one passenger they are licensed to carry.

Sanyu noted that despite this, compliance within the sector remains low.

“As riders, you have a responsibility to contribute to national revenue, and while people demand services, you must each uphold your rights and obligations,” she said.

She underscored the critical role of Boda Boda riders in the transport industry and cautioned them against using their motorcycles to transport contraband.

“I implore you to avoid illegal activities like riding numberless motorcycles, ferrying contraband, and smuggling because the law is clear, and it will catch up with you,” Sanyu said. “Check what you are carrying to guard against dangerous items.”

Her call resonated with the riders, as Ocen Emmy, the Chairperson of Gulu West Boda Association, appreciated the learning experience and commended the tax body for ensuring taxpayers understand their obligations.

“We have never interacted with URA for over 10 years; this is great, and indeed we have learned,” he said. “You are making an effort to reform yourselves from harsh tendencies, and we appreciate that.”

He urged his colleagues to prioritise such engagements to improve their understanding of taxes.
