Uganda Revenue Authority has called upon motorists in Adjumani district to comply with taxation laws, especially on the Advance Income Tax payable by motor vehicles in the transportation business.
During the door-to-door engagements in Awindiri, Pakelle and Dzaipi towns in Adjumani, Joshua Muwonge from URA ‘s Tax Education engaged truck drivers and boda-boda riders, telling them that they have an obligation to pay advance income tax.
“All persons dealing in the transportation of goods and people have an obligation to pay advance income tax. Those transporting people pay UGX 20,000 per person or seat per year, and those transporting goods pay UGX 50,000 per ton per year. I urge you to pay your fair share of tax so that you contribute to the development of Uganda,” he said.
Muwonge informed boda-boda riders that, although government has not yet fully come out to collect the advance income tax from them, they should voluntarily start paying the tax.
“Government has not yet started enforcing advance tax on boda bodas, but kindly voluntarily comply since we have sensitized you about it. It’s our responsibility to build our country by paying taxes,” he said.
The Tax Education team on Tujenge Bus also engaged traders, advising them to have in place business records that are crucial for assessments.
Andrew Bukenya, an expert in Tax Education, urged business owners to keep proper records, though some traders, such as Kabibi Maimuna in Awindiri, said that it is hard to keep proper records.
“My workers know the amount of my produce, but writing the figures is a problem, and that is why I am out of it,” she noted.
