URA introduces Taxpayers to New Led Web Returns

Uganda Revenue Authority has taken another step towards digital transformation by introducing taxpayers to the new Local Excise Duty (LED) web returns. This move is aimed at simplifying tax declarations and improving accuracy in tax reporting.

According to Ag. Assistant Commissioner Compliance Management, Garry Kizito, the new LED web return form was implemented on November 1st, 2024. Tax agents have already been trained on how to use the new web forms, and now manufacturers are being trained.

The new LED web return form replaces the old excel-based form that was downloaded from the portal. URA Local Excise Duty expert, Samalie Namitala, emphasized the importance of activating digital stamps whenever goods are leaving the premises.

URA has also been working to address concerns raised by taxpayers, including the issue of damages. According to Namitala, taxpayers can download a form from the portal to declare damaged products and URA is working to automate this process.

The Digital Tax Stamps (DTS) system will also be used to order digital stamps, while the e-tax SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) will be used for filing LED returns and making amendments.

Taxpayers have applauded URA for its digital transformation efforts but have requested more time to familiarize themselves with the new LED web return forms.

URA’s digital transformation efforts are part of its broader strategy to improve taxpayer experience and increase compliance. In October 2023, URA launched its Digital Strategy, which aims to provide instant service to clients through seamless digital channels.
