URA trains Business Associations on taxation

The Tax Education division of URA has trained 30 individuals from the Kampala Development Forum TIN registration, filing tax returns, and EFRIS.

Recently, URA TE team lead, Andrew Kyakonye led the team through the tax compliance cycle, which includes tax registration, return filing, tax payment, assessments, objections and appeals.

He asked the landlords, during the 2-days Voluntary Income Tax Assistance – VITA training, to establish clear guidelines for tenants, emphasizing the importance of keeping them informed and ensuring their compliance.

“We encourage you to be our ambassadors and promote tax compliance within your communities. We are providing this training to ensure that you are well-equipped,” said Kyakonye.

KDF President Nasser Jjumba cautioned members to take an interest in knowing the value of land before starting construction saying KCCA will levy taxes based on the land’s value rather than the type of house one has built.

“Leaders should ensure landlords pass on the right information to the tenants and sensitize them to ensure compliance,” he called out.

Jjumba urged his team to disclose their property to avoid sudden notices from URA.

During the training, John Sebagala asked how to pay taxes when four people conduct different businesses in a shared room, for which all pay rent.

In this case, Kyakonye advised him to encourage everyone in the shop to maintain proper business records, emphasizing the benefits of accountability.

This forum is a business advocacy group that encompasses various representatives of block managers and leaders who have collaborated with tax education in the Kampala Central Business District.

The VITA team has already trained the Mbarara City Traders’ Association (MBACITA) and Mbale City Traders Association (MACITA)
