Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) and the African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) have strengthened their partnership to promote responsible journalism by improving the quality of tax reporting in Uganda.
While speaking to the ACME delegation that had paid a courtesy visit to the Public and Corporate Affairs (PCA) this morning, Robert Kalumba, the Assistant Commissioner PCA commended ACME for its continued efforts in promoting journalistic excellence across the country.
Dr. George William Lugalambi, the Executive Director at ACME, seasoned Journalist and a seasoned international media developer, pointed out that many journalists shy away from reporting on finance, business, and taxation due to a lack of knowledge in these areas.
Kalumba expressed URA’s willingness to work with the media landscape in training Journalists in taxation reporting, with respect to analyzing tax data, Fact-checking tax information to avoid misinformation, explaining complex tax policies and their impact on the economy, amongst many other things.
“This continued collaboration will ultimately shift perceptions, and expedite public understanding of Uganda’s tax system through well-informed reporting and first-track tax education,” he said.
Rytter Muzira, the manager PCA emphasized the need for a continued, sustainable plan to improve tax reporting in the media.
“Improved reporting is not just about compliance; it’s about creating a culture of accountability and transparency. By empowering Journalists with the tools to interpret and communicate tax-related issues effectively, we can foster a more informed citizenry and drive economic literacy,” she said.
Established in 2009, the African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) is a Uganda-based non-profit organization whose mission is to promote journalistic excellence and media professionalism through training, research, and advocacy.
